Snowmobile across an Icelandic glacier and then descend deep below the ice cap’s surface to explore a underneath the glacier. Go Into the Glacier.
We will start the day in Reykjavik and head towards Húsafell in Borgarfjörður. When we arrive to Húsafell we will start our ascent to Langjökull glacier. Once we arrive at the glacier base camp, we put on the necessary clothing and helmets. Now you are ready to drive across the glacier wonderland that awaits you.
We will snowmobile up to the entrance to the glacier and walk down into a magnificent man made Ice Cave beneath the ice cap. Your guide will take you on this journey to the icy world deep within the glacier. The ice cave is about 500 meters long. Here you can spend the next 45 – 60 minutes walking through the cave and learn about the movements and formations of the glacier. The Cave might be slippery but you will get crampons to use better grip the icy floor.
Until very recently what lies beneath the surface of Langjökull was a mystery. But sometimes bold ideas do become a reality. This seemingly impossible feat was made possible through the combined efforts of the country´s top engineers and geo-physicists. Inside the glacier the temperature is usually around zero degrees Celsius or 32 Fahrenheit.
The unique Hraunfossar (lava waterfalls) and Barnafoss waterfalls will be the next destinations of our day.
After a short lunch at Húsafell, we will head to these two waterfalls that are located pretty close to Húsafell. You can see the crystal clear water emerge from the volcanic rock lava field and fall down into Hvitá (white river). Hvítá is a beautiful turquoise glacial river steaming from the Langjökull glacier. The waterfalls are maybe not the largest waterfalls in Iceland but they are still very beautiful and unique.
On the bus that we will be traveling on this tour you will find computer tablets in each seat. On the tablets you can use the GPS Sensitive Audio Guide that is available in 10 languages. The Audio Guide will tell you interesting facts about Iceland as we drive to the glacier. You will also find a USB Charger and free WiFi on board the bus. There will also be a guide with you on the tour that can assist you if you have any questions.
