When in Iceland
The Blue Lagoon (icelandic: Bláa Lónið) geothermal spa is one of the most visited attractions in Iceland. Because of Iceland’s location on one of Earth’s moodiest fault lines (the Mid-Atlantic Ridge which separates the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates) it is rife with volcanic activity. Mineral rich hot water from far beneath the earth forms the spectacular lagoon, where a luxurious health spa has been developed in the rugged lava landscape. The lagoon’s geothermal seawater is known for its positive effects on the skin. The water temperature in the bathing and swimming area of the lagoon averages 37–39 °C (99–102 °F).
The Blue Lagoon was formed in 1976 during operation at the nearby geothermal power plant, Svartsengi. In the years that followed, people started bathing in the unique water and apply the silica mud to their skin and noticed that it has great effects on the skin. Those with psoriasis noticed an incredible improvement in their condition. Over the years, Blue Lagoon has been innovative in harnessing this gift of nature to develop different spa services and products. Today, Blue Lagoon is recognized as one of the wonders of the world.
From the beginning, research & development has been one of the driving forces of the Blue Lagoon. Their resource & development team works with some of the world’s most distinguished scientists, creating a strong, professional network and building knowledge in bio-technology, dermatology and marine cosmetology.
Blue Lagoon spa treatments are a unique experience. They bring connection to Icelandic primordial nature through the exclusive Blue Lagoon skin care line which is the foundation of the treatments.
The outdoor spa area is spacious and more than one treatment can take place simultaneously, making it possible for couples to have a treatment at the same time. In-water spa treatments take place on a specially designed wooden bench and massages are performed on a mattress in the lagoon. Special blankets are used to keep guests warm. Floating in the mineral-rich water, in close proximity to the lagoon’s extraordinary environment, surrounded by the natural elements and pure Icelandic air, is a unique experience for body and mind.
Blue Lagoon Iceland offers accommodation at the Blue Lagoon Clinic Hotel, located a five minute walking distance from the lagoon. The rooms at the Clinic are well designed and spacious with a private bathroom and a small porch.
The Blue Lagoon skin care line is a true naturceutical product line based on the Blue Lagoon geothermal seawater and its active ingredients; minerals, silica and algae and represent a perfect harmony between nature and science. The Blue Lagoon active ingredients are sustainably sourced and production methods are green and environmentally friendly.

Showers – Many articles about the Blue Lagoon say that you are required to shower before entering the lagoon, and you are required to shower naked, and last but not least you must shower naked in a communal shower. Some people skip the Blue Lagoon because of this but don’t worry. The locker room monitors are not forcing you to strip down, there are a plenty of showers stalls with doors and frosted glass, and last but not least no one is watching you. Icelandic people are used to this, we always shower naked when we go to the swimming pools or an natural hot spring so this is an usual thing for us. So if you are going to skip the Blue Lagoon because of the public nudity fear, you can always shower with the door closed an no one will see you.
Conditioner – use the conditioner and use a lot of it. It is free and provided in every shower. Leave it in your hair upon entering the pool, and if your hair is long tie it up on your head. Do your best not to get it wet; chances are it will happen at some point but if it does, head back to the shower area and re-condition. The salt and minerals in the water, though amazing for your skin, will wreck havoc on your hair and dry it out. Use the conditioner, try not to get it too wet, and you will be fine.
The face mask – The Blue Lagoon silicon mud masks are free in the Blue Lagoon. The mixture can be found in crates surrounding the pool at various intervals. Dip the little fork through the cracks leave it on for 10 minutes and you will have beautifully soft and clean skin.
If you want to up the experience head over to the pool bar and purchase the frozen mask (approximately $5). One piece will be more than enough for two people. Wet the piece a little then spread it over your face and leave it for 15 minutes. It will tingle towards the end but it is supposed to work wonders.
The Pool Bar – The swim-up pool bar in the Blue Lagoon is for someone the best place in the lagoon. And if you were wondering, you can drink in the pool. Whether you are after beer, cocktails, or even champagne you can find it here. For a healthier choice go for a Skyr (a great Icelandic yogurt) smoothie.
Go around the lagoon – Check out around the pool, some places may be warmer than others, while others are a little shallower or deeper. Towards the back you can also take advantage of the steam bath or sauna. And an absolute favorite is the massaging waterfall. Stand under this and any muscle tension in your back or shoulders will be released in no time.
